LIVING LAB

Milton Keynes University Hospital is tackling a critical issue facing the NHS: healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). By co-designing and testing digital solutions, we can help hospitals and care homes reduce the risk of infection, save costs, free up beds, and enhance patient and staff wellbeing.

Tracking Infection: Milton Keynes Foundation Trust

Government Priority
Infection control

Setting Category
Secondary care

Setting type
Same day emergency care

7% of patients contract HCAIs during their hospital stay, resulting in prolonged hospitalisation and bed shortages. Using real-time location services, teams can monitor the movement and proximity of hospital assets, patients, and staff with sub-metre accuracy, enabling efficient tracking and response to infections. By leveraging these technologies, we can give healthcare settings the real-time insight they need to control infection.

Why this matters

Implementing secure digital solutions

This Living Lab explores technologies and approaches, including:

Real-time location systems (RTLS)

Infection tracking

Patient flow management

Medical device asset management

Electronic bed capacity management

Through collaboration and real-world testing, this Living Lab:

Creating better outcomes

Reduces healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs)

Improves infection prevention

Reduces bed shortages

The Milton Keynes Foundation Trust Living Lab brings together NHS, technology partners and academic researchers to co-design, test and evaluate digital solutions before wider adoption.
